Lasaunders Holland, Jr. 53 of Xenia passed away Monday, December 22, 2008 at 9:15 a.m. in the Springfield Regional Medical Center High Street Campus.
He was born April 26, 1955 in Xenia, Ohio the son of Lasaunders and Clara M. (Stinson) Holland, Sr. Lasaunders began playing organ in 1969 at the age of fourteen. Both of his grandmothers and an aunt played piano and organ. They too served in their local churches as pianists and organists. Lasaunders studied organ under the late Lillian Ankeney at the Bandbox, a local music store in downtown Xenia. In April 1969, First A.M.E. Church purchased a spinet Thomas organ, but no one in the church came forward to take the position of organist. The church was informed that Lasaunders was taking organ lessons and asked if he would play for Sunday morning services. After studying organ for about six weeks and having only one and a half years of piano, Lasaunders agreed to play for Sunday morning services. The ministers wife, Beatrice Shipes was the church pianist and she played piano and Lasaunders played organ every Sunday for the next four years.
In 1973, Lasaunders entered Bluffton College to take a double major of accounting and business. While in his first year of college, he decided to also study applied organ under Dr. Stephen Jacoby. Lasaunders studied under Dr. Jacoby for the next three years. In his senior year, Lasaunders became the organist at Ottawa Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, Ohio.
After playing morning services in Ottawa, Lasaunders would go to the Bluffton Mennonite Nursing Home at noon and play organ music for one hour in the nursing home chapel. Lasaunders was very active in the music department in college and was on the colleges student activities board of directors known as the Marbeck Center Board. In 1976, while still in college, he became organist for United A.M.E. church. He has studied Jazz under former Central state University professor Dr. Matt Cooper, traditional gospel organ music under Marc Anthony and attended the Hampton University Organists and Choir Directors Workshop at Hampton University. Lasaunders is a member of the American Guild of Organists. Outside of his music activities Lasaunders has been a member of the Institute of Management Accountants, holds membership in the American Management Association, assists a local accounting service business with financial analysis of businesses for tax purposes.
Lasaunders holds a Master Degree in management from Antioch University, is the former director of Day-Vest of Dayton, Ohio, is the former choirmaster-organist of the Sheffield Chorus, served on the finance committee and trustee board at United A.M.E. Church, occasionally played for the Harmonious Three and was currently director of music at Holy Trinity A.M.E. Church, Wilberforce, Ohio. Lasaunders was employed by Xenia Community Schools for several years and employed by Wright Patt Credit Union upon his death. Lasaunders attributes his accomplishments to God, his parents, brother and sisters. If for nothing else in this world, Lasaunders knew that he was to play the organ. He knew this because he asked God and God told him so.
